US Airways to Assess $25 Fee for Second Bag
Following in the footsteps of United Airlines, US Airways will implement a $25 service fee for a second checked bag effective for all travel on or after May 5, 2008. Travelers who purchased airline tickets before Feb. 26 for travel on or after May 5 are exempt from the policy change.
The new checked-bag policy applies to all flights within the U.S., to and from Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. The $25 second-bag fee also applies to all itineraries operated by US Airways, US Airways Express and US Airways Shuttle.
Customers can continue to check one bag free of charge. In addition, the airline will waive the second-bag fee for the following customers:
• All Dividend Miles Preferred members (Silver, Gold, Platinum and Chairman’s Preferred)
• Passengers traveling to and from Europe, or to and from Asia
• Confirmed First Class and Envoy passengers at time of check-in
• Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members
• Active military personnel with ID and government-issued travel orders
• Unaccompanied minors
• Passengers checking personal assistive devices
The airline estimates about 8 percent of its passengers check more than one bag. Customers can pay this service fee at an airport kiosk with a credit card or at the check-in counter with a credit card, check or cash.
