Ramshorn Guest Ranch Provides Easy Access to Wyoming's Most Pristine Playgrounds
The Ramshorn Guest Ranch, about 12 miles west of Dubois, Wyo., is positioned in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains between the Teton and Wind River mountain ranges. This is not a typical guest ranch with horses, dudes and people playing cowboy, but rather a place to rent a rustic cabin or Native American teepee and get away from life’s everyday hassles and conveniences while enjoying Wyoming’s most pristine mountain environment.
The family-owned ranch operates from June to August with access to phenomenal mountain biking and hiking on single-track trails, fishing, photography and potential for early-summer backcountry skiing.
Stay in a Cabin or a Teepee
The Ramshorn Guest Ranch offers three unique cabin rentals with a rustic and Western charm not found in many places anymore. Two of the cabins sleep six people each and one cabin sleeps four. All of the cabins have a fully furnished kitchenette for guests to cook their own meals, bathroom, linens and towels, and a wood-burning fireplace for a cozy and comfortable stay. The only items that these cabins do not have are televisions, telephones (the main lodge has a telephone for guests), or Internet service.
If you want to rough it a bit more, try staying in one of the ranch's two authentic Native American teepees. One teepee sleeps four to five people and has a queen-size bed, the other teepee sleeps three to four people and comes with a cot. A grill or fireplace for cooking is provided, but you should bring car-camping items and utensils if staying in a teepee.
Tent and RV spaces also are available at the ranch. With these rentals, guests have access to laundry and washhouse facilities (shower, tub, toilet).
Leisure time is often spent in the large recreation cabin known as “Moose.” Here you'll find a ping-pong and pool table, piano, TV/VCR, board games and library, and it is a great meeting place for groups, families or friends.
Get Outside and Play
The Ramshorn Ranch borders the Shoshone National Forest and provides easy access into the Absaroka Mountains. Guests can mountain bike or hike/backpack directly from their cabins. The single track in this area is heavenly, with big mountain riding and hiking. There is no charge for these activities since they are not guided and gear is not provided, but plenty of local knowledge is provided for a safe and enjoyable outing. Wildlife is abundant and it is not uncommon to see elk, deer, sandhill cranes, grizzly bears, wolves, coyotes and moose, so be sure to bring your camera.
Plenty of lakes and streams host native trout for fly or lure fishing in the general vicinity, and the owners are more than willing to give away their secret spots to ensure guests catch a few fish.
The ranch is a direct gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Both parks are only 70 miles away, and many clients who stay at the ranch venture into Yellowstone for a day trip. A trip to this part of the state is not complete without seeing the Tetons or Old Faithful geyser.
Every night at the ranch, the owners have a large bonfire for guests to enjoy while taking in great views of Ramshorn Peak, roasting s’mores, and telling stories about that big fish that was caught or wildlife seen while hiking on the trails.
