Maine Handicapped Skiing's Ski-A-Thon Raises Funds for Year-Round Programs
A free day of skiing or riding. Three delicious meals. Great prizes. A fun race. A zany obstacle course. Dancing. And last but not least, a ton of laughter. It must be Maine Handicapped Skiing's 22nd annual Ski-A-Thon, which is set for Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Sunday River Ski Resort and Sunday River Inn & Cross Country Ski Center.
Did you know that every lesson taught at Maine Handicapped Skiing, winter and summer, is free of charge to its participants? That's where the Ski-A-Thon comes in. The pledges that participants solicit from friends, co-workers, family and businesses result in 70 percent of Maine Handicapped Skiing's operating income for one whole year. In one day, thanks to the incredible generosity of hundreds of Ski-A-Thoners and some terrific sponsors, the organization is able to raise the income needed to support its year-round programs.
So, here's the deal: Get a team of up to five people together (downhill skiers, cross-country skiers or snowboarders) and raise a minimum of $600 in pledges (per team) to participate. The more your team raises in pledges, the more you'll qualify for great prizes and incentives.
Maine Handicapped Skiing is a year-round adaptive recreational program that teaches adaptive sports activities to people with physical disabilities, ages 6 and up. Developing physical strength, self-confidence and social contacts are just some of the great benefits achieved by participants at Maine Handicapped Skiing in its winter and summer sports activities. To be in a place where one's disability doesn't define you, but is just one aspect of a person's life helps build great confidence in participants. Working with volunteers often builds new friendships and social relationships that are so important as well.
And what a thrill it is to fly down the slopes or kayak down a river, free as a bird, using one's muscles, balance, coordination and flexibility to make it all work! So do your part to share the joy of outdoor sports with people with physical disabilities.
