American Airlines Joins Rest of 'Big Six'
in Charging $25 for Second Checked Bag
It should come as no surprise that American Airlines has decided to charge passengers $25 for their second checked bag, which up until now has always been free. After all, five of the other "Big Six" legacy carriers—United, US Airways, Delta, Northwest and Continental—have already done so.
The new fee takes effect for domestic economy-class tickets purchased on or after May 12, 2008, and applies each way. It affects tickets for travel in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada. Passengers are still allowed two free checked bags when flying on other international itineraries.
Exceptions to this policy include customers who purchase First or Business Class tickets, AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Gold® members as well as customers who purchase full-fare tickets in economy class. Passengers flying on military and government fares also are exempt.
Customers can continue to check one bag free of charge, as well as bring one carry-on bag and a personal item into the cabin with them.
