ROW Adventures Blends Whitewater Rafting with a Dash of Wilderness Culinary Lessons
If whitewater rafting and perfecting your wilderness cooking skills top your list of fun, then ROW Adventures' Culinary Whitewater Rafting Series is just the trip for you. After a thrilling day on the river, ROW Adventures' guides and a skilled chef will teach guests how to prepare gourmet meals in the wilderness using Dutch ovens.
Dutch ovens have long been used in the West. Lewis and Clark, sourdoughs of gold rush days and pioneers on the Oregon Trail all depended on these versatile cooking pots that allow a person to bake just about anything. Participants in ROW's cooking adventure will learn all the tricks of Dutch oven cooking with a focus on regional Northwest fare such as wild salmon, Pacific oysters, huckleberries, Idaho potatoes, mushrooms, apples and other fresh seasonal fruit. Meals will be paired with Oregon, Washington and Idaho wines along with tasting notes of each featured wine.
You can choose from the following itineraries:
July 19–23, 2010: Spend five-days on Idaho’s Salmon River Canyons, a moderate Class III whitewater rafting trip with camps on huge white-sand beaches. Rafting trips on the Salmon River Canyons cascade guests down 60 miles of Idaho’s famous Salmon "River of No Return." This Idaho whitewater trip feature warm water, massive white-sand beaches and short hikes to historic sites of the Nez Perce Indians. The trip is ideal for beginners but exciting for experienced rafters as well. Highlights include wildlife viewing, fishing, Chinese rock houses, pioneer homesteads and Native American rock art, as well as huge white-sand beaches, warm swimming water, big mountains and western scenery.
August 23–28, 2010: Spend six-days on the moderate Class III–IV rapids of Idaho’s legendary Middle Fork of the Salmon. The pure, clear, free-flowing river drops 3,000 feet during its 105-mile journey through Idaho's remote and spectacular River of No Return Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Natural and untamed, Idaho's Middle Fork is protected by Congress as one of America’s first Wild and Scenic Rivers. It has shaped its course through a rugged and diverse landscape. There are no roads leading to its banks and little remains of man’s brief presence other than prehistoric pictographs and dilapidated log cabins. Highlights include natural hot springs, Native American pictographs, pioneer homesteads, incredible scenery and wildlife viewing.
September 10–14, 2010: Spend five-days on the famous Snake River through Hells Canyon. Hells Canyon was carved by the powerful Snake River and is North America's deepest gorge at nearly 8,000 feet. The area is inaccessible by road and offers stunning mountain vistas and scenic glimpses into remote regions of Idaho and Oregon wilderness, making it the best autumn whitewater in the West. This classic river rafting experience features Class III–IV whitewater rapids and abundant wildlife. Highlights include big-volume, Grand Canyon-style rapids, 70-degree water temperature, Native American pictograph sites, pioneer homesteads, incredible scenery, an extensive trail system and wildlife viewing.
Make sure to leave room in your luggage for the trip home: All participants will receive a complimentary Dutch oven and a ROW apron to take home.
