Eastern Mountain Sports Adventure Schools Announces 2006/07 Winter Programs
Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) is well-known for its EMS Adventure Schools and outdoor adventure programs. For 2007, EMS is offering several winter programs worth considering: in addition to Alpine touring, winter camping, ski mountaineering, backcountry tours and avalanche courses, they've added lift-serviced telemark instruction.
Tenney Mountain, N.H., which is closed for the 2006/07 season, will turn on the lifts for select weekends in February and March, offering a variety of tours and instruction through the EMS Adventure Schools. The Tenney programs are part of the EMS Adventure Schools newest expansion efforts, which will also include courses at Attitash, Cranmore and Black Mountain, N.H., and Wachusett, Mass.
“We are really excited to offer these unique programs,” said Steve Nichopor, EMS Ski Program Coordinator. “Participants (at Tenney) will get the whole mountain to themselves, along with free equipment demos, workshops and instruction from our experienced staff.”
Introduction courses for telemark, snowboarding and Alpine touring are taught by the school’s PSIA-certified instructors. In addition you can take guided backcountry tours, advanced skill clinics, winter camping and survival skills programs. Winter camping courses are offered in Acton, Mass., as well as North Conway, N.H., and Lake Placid, N.Y. Alpine touring is available in North Conway and Lake Placid. Some courses mix Alpine touring or telemarking with winter camping, ski mountaineering and backcountry safety. American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) avalanche courses are available throughout the winter.
