New Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge Offers
Alaska Adventure Starting in June 2009
New for June 2009, Alaska Wildland Adventures, which has provided outfitter and guiding services since 1977, unveils its latest endeavor: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. The new wilderness eco-lodge, surrounded by Kenai Fjords National Park, is the only lodge within the park.
The rugged beauty of Alaska's spectacular seacoast is balanced with the creature comforts of private cabins, an elegantly rustic main lodge and hearty groumet meals. With only 16 cabins surrounded by the 1,700-acre Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary, the Glacier Lodge offers a unique and uncrowded perspective of Kenai Fjords National Park. Guest cabins were designed to be minimally visible from the adjacent Pedersen Lagoon, while still commanding stunning views from within. The private cabins feature on-demand heat and electricity as well as full bath amenities.
Vermont Officials Allow Access to Big Jay from Jay Peak Resort's Tram for 2008/09
Backcountry skiers and snowboarders will again be allowed responsible access from Jay Peak Resort, Vt., to the backcountry terrain on Big Jay, which is part of the Jay State Forest, for the 2008/09 winter season. The agreement was signed this past July by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, the Green Mountain Club (GMC), Jay Peak Resort, and the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board.
Big Jay was closed last year to access via Jay Peak’s aerial tram as part of the effort to restore the large scar that was illegally cut on Big Jay Mountain in July 2007 (for our previous news coverage of the Big Jay illegal cutting, please read Officials Restrict Winter Access to Big Jay and Green Mountain Club Restoration Project: Nearly 1,000 Trees Illegally Cut on Big Jay).
“The plan we cooperatively developed will now allow access to Big Jay for this season when snow conditions are appropriate. This is a great step in managing backcountry skiing,” said Jonathan Wood, commissioner of the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.

Want to Know When Seats Are Available for Your Frequent-Flyer Awards? Try Yapta.com
Yapta.com announced a frequent-flier award-seat alert service, enabling travelers to be notified when they can use their frequent-flier miles to book an award seat that becomes available on a specific flight. The award-seat alerts are provided in tandem with Yapta's airfare price-change alerts that, to date, have notified hundreds of thousands of travelers to more than $90 million in airfare savings. Travelers receiving Yapta's award-seat alerts are notified when award seats are available for the minimum mileage possible, regardless of seat class or program mileage level.
"One of the biggest frustrations for frequent travelers is not knowing when they can actually redeem their miles to book an award seat," said Tom Romary, president and CEO of Yapta. "Yapta now alerts travelers via email when an award seat is available, so they don't miss out on an opportunity to use their hard-earned miles. As a personal travel assistant, Yapta enables travelers to choose the exact flights they want to take and—in addition to checking prices—tracks daily the availability of award seat inventory for them."
Winter's Here, It's Time to Learn or Refresh Your Backcountry Safety and Survival Skills
Whether you've been skiing in the backcountry for years, or are just getting interested in the idea, you can never be too prepared for wilderness travel. Here are a few activities to help you get ready for winter sidecountry and backcountry recreation:
Avalanche courses: Avalanche courses will teach you such things as interpreting the terrain, weather and snowpack; making safe and effective decisions as individuals and as members of a group; planning for backcountry trips and deciding on alternative routes; and rescuing companions using beacon, probe and shovel. The emphasis in an avalanche course is on developing effective decision-making skills: if you have to rescue someone caught in an avalanche, there was a failure somewhere along the line in the decision-making process—the idea is that if you make good decisions, you won't find yourself in terrain that slides.
