Ski Utah Launches Website Addressing Environmental Issues and Solutions
We just checked out Ski Utah's new KeepUtahCool.com website and think it's worth reading. Everyone knows that winters are changing around the world—whether you believe it's because of global warming or some other cause is a moot point. Fact is, our grandkids might not grow up to enjoy a "ski season" as we know it. I sure notice that winter is significantly different than when I was a kid—and despite what friends might jest, that wasn't all that long ago.
The site discusses global warming, points out how it can impact the future of the ski industry and suggest ways we can make a difference. It also highlights environmental programs at Utah ski areas. You might think it's too little too late, but this is one of those situations where doing nothing is the worst reaction we can have.
Snowwater Buys Valhalla Powdercats
Snowwater Heliskiing and Snowcat Skiing in Nelson, B.C., has acquired Valhalla Powdercats, making this new combined helicopter and snowcat team the largest and most diversified heli-cat ski operation in Canada.
Snowwater and Valhalla will continue to operate under separate names but will share their extensive guiding and management expertise. A new central reservation system will make booking combo trips easier. Guests now have access to three mountain ranges and an increased variety of vacation choices.

The 74-seat Q400 turboprop flies at nearly jet aircraft speed and is a relatively quiet aircraft. Horizon operates 20 Q400 aircraft, and has an additional 12 on order for delivery starting in late 2006. Select flights currently operated with 37-seat Q200 turboprops will be replaced with the Q400 as follows:
Big Mountain Debuts Day Lodge,
Beginner Lift and Terrain
Big Mountain’s new 35,000-square-foot Day Lodge will debut during the 2006/07 ski season. Plans are to have portions of the lodge open by Christmas, with the remainder opening throughout the winter. The $10-million expansion creates a central location for mountain services including the Snowsports School, kids' center and day-care facility, rental shop, full-service cafeteria, main ticket office, guest services, seasonal lockers, group space and day-use basket-check. In addition, a viewing lounge enables guests to watch skiers and snowboarders on the new beginner slopes. Parking and drop-off areas are part of the development here.
Vail Resorts and National Forest Foundation Partner to Raise Conservation Funds
Vail Resorts, Inc., and the National Forest Foundation have partnered together to raise money for conservation projects in the White River National Forest in Colorado and the national forests of Lake Tahoe Basin in California and Nevada, where Vail Resorts operates its five mountain resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly.
Throughout the 2006/2007 winter season, Vail Resorts will offer guests at its five mountain resorts the opportunity to participate in a special fundraising effort by contributing $1 on season passes, $1 on online lift ticket transactions, and $1 per room night at its Colorado-based lodging properties. Each dollar raised by Vail Resorts will be matched with 50 cents by the National Forest Foundation.
Alaska Airlines Adds Seattle-Fairbanks Flights for Winter Travelers
Alaska Airlines announced plans to increase the number of nonstop flights between Fairbanks and Seattle during the wintertime. Starting Feb. 11, 2007, Alaska Airlines will add a second daily nonstop flight connecting Fairbanks and Seattle, doubling the number of daily nonstop flights previously available between late October and the end of April. The flights will be operated on a Boeing 737-400 aircraft, accommodating 12 passengers in first class and 132 in the main cabin.
The additional frequency will support increasing demand for more convenient daytime travel between Fairbanks and Seattle as well as a growing market of winter tourists traveling north to explore the Alaskan interior.
