Resorts Start Opening for 2007/08 Season
In typical early-season fashion, Mother Nature is toying with resorts across the United States and Canada. With Thanksgiving looming, some regions of the continent are being hammered with snow, while others are having dry and warm bouts that are forcing resorts to push back opening days. Those of us in the Northeast are in the second day of a storm that's dropped anywhere from 4 inches to 16 inches, depending upon where you live, with more to come before midnight shuts down the storm system. With many Northeast resorts opening tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 17), you can imagine the feeding frenzy this weekend will see. We'll be at Jay Peak's opening day and I'm sure it will be a zoo with all the snow they've gotten—but we're willing to make the sacrifice to test out the product! On the other coast, Alyeska has received 130 inches since Nov. 1, plenty to keep skiers and riders in Nirvana when it opens tomorrow. Whistler Blackcomb was blessed with 37 inches in seven days and has moved up opening day at Whistler Mountain to tomorrow to take advantage of this bounty. In a freak of nature moment, Utah finds itself high and dry. Only Solitude is spinning the lifts, with two easy runs open. Those of you who live where you can ski this weekend, enjoy yourselfs! And those of you who are waiting for snow, time to make some offerings to Ullr.
Green Mountain Club Restoration Project: Nearly 1,000 Trees Illegally Cut on Big Jay
On July 11, 2007, the Green Mountain Club (GMC) received a call from tram operators at Jay Peak Resort, Vt., that would lead to the discovery of the largest easement violation in the history of GMC’s stewardship program. A chainsaw and other tools had been used to cut an illegal trail almost 2,000 feet long from near the summit of Big Jay down to the existing system of logging roads leading to Route 242. Nearly 1,000 trees had been cut and the opening ranged in width from 20 to 60 feet.
Within two weeks, two individuals had been arrested and confessed to the crime as a result of the combined efforts of GMC staff and volunteers and Wardens Brad Mann and Mark Schichtle.
A sub-committee of GMC’s stewardship committee was formed to assist and advise in responding to the easement violation, including evaluating legal options, short-term restoration efforts, and long-term management of the damaged property.

Priceline.com Permanently Eliminates Booking Fees on Published Airline Fares
Priceline.com® announced that it will permanently eliminate airline ticket booking fees on all published domestic and international fares. The booking fee elimination applies to all priceline.com tickets purchased on a published-price basis and does not apply to priceline.com's Name Your Own Price® airline ticketing service, which already delivers some of the deepest discounts among the so-called opaque ticketing services.
