Orbitz Partners with CarbonFund.org, Launches Green Vacation Microsite

Thinking "green" when you travel? A recent Orbitz survey* found that more than half of Americans feel the U.S. tourist industry is lagging when it comes to being "eco-friendly." In response, Orbitz has developed a microsite with eco-friendly travel tools and environmentally-focused content.

"Orbitz Worldwide is committed to being a vocal proponent within the travel community, working to offset the impact our industry has on the environment, so we're enthusiastic about our partnership with a highly respected organization like CarbonFund.org and the launch of Version 1.0 of our eco-microsite," said Steve Barnhart, CEO and president of Orbitz Worldwide, a division of Travelport Ltd.

Ski Resort Green Power Program Continues to Snowball, Environmental Awards Earned

Ski areas across North America are investing in renewable energy to green their operations and do their part in the fight against global warming. To date, 58 resorts in 16 states and provinces are buying renewable energy to offset all or part of their operational energy use. These resorts serve as a model for other industries and encourage resorts guests to become involved in the fight against global warming.

Of these 58 resorts, 28 are offsetting 100 percent of their energy use through the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs). All told, these 28 resorts are purchasing 292,853,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of green energy and their purchases result in the avoidance of 427,596,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is the equivalent of planting nearly 17 million trees or avoiding more than 169,000 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco.

Air Canada Teams with Zerofootprint to Let Passengers Buy Carbon Offsets for Travel

Air Canada is offering customers the choice to reduce the environmental impact of their travel in cooperation with Zerofootprint, a not-for-profit organization that operates carbon offset programs.

"Air Canada is committed to giving customers the opportunity to reduce the environmental effects of their travel. We not only want to make it possible for people to make good environmental choices, but we also want to play our part in addressing climate change," said Charles McKee, vice-president of marketing at Air Canada. "By working with Zerofootprint, we will make it easy for people to calculate the impact of their journey and mitigate those effects with a small, voluntary additional payment to support environmental projects that reduce greenhouse gases."

Green Initiative for Luxury-Hungry Travelers

The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd., the largest global luxury hotel brand, has launched the Leading Green Initiative. This innovative program will enable and encourage guests to make a conscious decision toward greener travel by actively supporting Sustainable Travel International (STI), the foremost non-profit organization in responsible tourism.

The Leading Green Initiative is a carbon neutral program whereby The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd., will directly absorb the cost to offset guests’ energy consumption for stays at any of its 440 hotels worldwide.

Continental Airlines, Sustainable Travel International Partner to Offer Carbon Offsets

Continental Airlines and Sustainable Travel International announced plans to offer customers the option to participate in a carbon offsetting program. The voluntary program will allow travelers to calculate the carbon footprint of their booked itinerary and purchase carbon offsets online from non-profit Sustainable Travel International.

Proceeds from purchased offsets are invested by Sustainable Travel International into high-impact sustainable development projects, including reforestation, renewable energy and energy conservation. These projects, which also benefit local communities, are located all over the world. Customers will have the option of selecting which kind of program they would like their carbon offsets to benefit.
