American Airlines Joins Rest of 'Big Six'
in Charging $25 for Second Checked Bag

It should come as no surprise that American Airlines has decided to charge passengers $25 for their second checked bag, which up until now has always been free. After all, five of the other "Big Six" legacy carriers—United, US Airways, Delta, Northwest and Continental—have already done so.

The new fee takes effect for domestic economy-class tickets purchased on or after May 12, 2008, and applies each way. It affects tickets for travel in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada. Passengers are still allowed two free checked bags when flying on other international itineraries.

Virginia Connects the Green Dots for
Eco-Conscious Travelers with New Web Site

Virginia’s state tourism office has launched VirginiaGreenTravel.org, a new website dedicated to environmentally friendly travel in Virginia. The new travel site supports Virginia Green, a partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality DEQ) that promotes environmentally friendly practices in Virginia’s tourism industry.

VirginiaGreenTravel.org will serve as a gateway to the state’s certified-green tourism businesses including more than 140 lodging facilities as well as restaurants, attractions and more. The new site also has convenient links to Virginia state parks, outdoor adventure programs, the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, eco-friendly events and travel tips.

AirTran, JetBlue and Alaska Air Group Are First Low-Cost Airlines to Charge for 2nd Bag

Once the legacy airlines announced they'll be charging economy flyers to check a second piece of luggage, it didn't take long for the low-cost carriers to get in line. AirTran, JetBlue and Alaska Air Group (Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air) have each announced a new policy, though they are not all charging the same fee. They all continue to allow one free checked bag and their carry-on policies remain intact.

Of course, there's "fine print" for each of the airlines.
