Our Photo Galleries: The Inferno Pentathlon at Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington

Scott and I headed to North Conway and Mount Washington in New Hampshire to cover the Inferno Pentathlon on April 21, 2007. Organized by Friends of Tuckerman Ravine, the race includes running, kayaking, cycling, hiking up Mount Washington, and skiing down a GS course set in Tuckerman Ravine. Some competitors ran in the Tuckerman and Tuckerwoman categories (equivalent to an Ironman or Ironwoman where they compete in every leg of the race), others entered as couples or teams. I suppose it will come as no surprise that neither Scott nor I will consider competing in the hiking portion, since most competitors did it in a third to a half of our time. Nonetheless, it was a gorgeous day to be in the mountains, a classic spring skiing day that also attracted hikers, snowshoers and folks sliding on everything imaginable.

The registration fees for the Inferno benefited The Friends of Tuckerman Ravine. In its own words: "The Friends of Tuckerman Ravine was founded to provide citizen support to the U.S. Forest Service in order to preserve and protect Tuckerman Ravine and the Cutler River Drainage Area that surround it on Mount Washington and in Pinkhams Grant, Coos County, New Hampshire; to promote the continuation of the historic uses of Tuckerman Ravine and the Cutler River Drainage Area; to organize, fund and manage projects, publicity, education and events for the purposes of the association; and to provide public input for legislation and regulation regarding Tuckerman Ravine and the Cutler River Drainage Area." We hope you enjoy the event photos in our galleries.
