We're Back from Southern Colorado,
Where We Skied Five Resorts in Eight Days

We've recently returned from a ski trip to Southern Colorado, where we spent eight days straight skiing five different resorts—a reconnaissance mission so we can tell you what to expect if you decide to visit any of these mountains. Our stops included Silverton Mountain, Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, Telluride Ski Resort, Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain.

You can look forward to a front-page story at the beginning of next season covering our Southern Colorado adventures, as well as extensive photography in our photo galleries. In the meantime, we've loaded up some of Scott's photos to keep you salivating until next season's coverage. Just go to our Photo Galleries and click on the "Last Uploads" link at the top of the page or click on the first photo thumbnail on the "Last Additions" section at the bottom of the page. We've also added a few pictures from Jay Peak's latest storm on April 13. Enjoy!

Ball Mountain Dam Spring Release Attracts Whitewater Enthusiasts to Southern Vermont

Jamaica State Park in Jamaica, Vt., is the center of activity for the West River whitewater events each April and September when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases water from its Ball Mountain Dam. The controlled water releases produce ideal rafting, kayaking and canoeing opportunities on the West River in southern Vermont. This spring's release is scheduled for April 28 and 29, 2007.

The event draws whitewater enthusiasts from around the northeast as kayakers, canoeists and river rafters all join in the fun of paddling the Class II to Class IV rapids. Thousands of people come to the park to watch the action on the West River and hike along the 3-mile-long former rail bed turned hiking trail that gently winds up the steep valley. (Editors Note: For photos of the September 2006 release, see the Jamaica, Vermont, Whitewater album in the LetsPlanTrips.com Photo Galleries.)

Amtrak's 'Whistle Stop' Website Allows Travelers to Share Train Travel Experiences

As more travelers become concerned about the environmental footprint they leave behind, train travel has been garnering a lot of attention. Whether you're an avid train traveler or you've never ridden a train, here's something that you'll find entertaining and informative: Amtrak has launched a new website for travelers to share their train travel experiences. Christened "Whistle Stop," the site, found at whistlestop.amtrak.com, includes feature stories on Amtrak routes with photos taken from the train along those routes.

The first three feature stories on Whistle Stop focus on three of Amtrak’s most popular long-distance routes: the Adirondack (Montreal to New York), the Empire Builder (Chicago to Portland/Seattle) and the Southwest Chief (Chicago to Los Angeles). These features are first-person travelogues by professional writers that provide readers with detailed descriptions of what passengers may experience when traveling on these trains. The first-hand accounts of life on board include descriptions of the sights to be seen from the train as well as activities and the people you meet on board.

Vail Resorts and National Forest Foundation Distribute First Round of Conservation Funds

Vail Resorts, Inc., and the National Forest Foundation have announced the first round of conservation projects to receive funds as result of their fundraising partnership that began in September 2006. Seven non-profit organizations will receive a share of $225,815 to begin conservation projects on Colorado's White River National Forest where Vail Resorts operates Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone mountain resorts.

The National Forest Foundation solicited project proposals from local non-Federal, community-based and other non-profit organizations. Priority was given to action-oriented collaborative projects that pro-actively addressed conservation issues on the White River National Forest, such as wildlife habitat improvement, recreation and stream restoration. Other proposal criteria included a description of how each project will improve the condition of the forest in a measurable, hands-on way as well as a measure of the involvement and benefits to surrounding communities.

Delta to Launch Carbon Offset Program for Customers Beginning This Summer

Delta Air Lines is partnering with The Conservation Fund, a leading environmental non-profit organization dedicated to protecting land and water resources, to become the first U.S. airline to help its customers give back to the environment by buying trees to help offset carbon emissions associated with air travel. To kick off the program, Delta is making a donation to The Conservation Fund for every customer taking a Delta mainline or Delta Shuttle flight on Earth Day, April 22, 2007, and is pledging a commitment to plant a tree for each of the airline's 47,000 employees.

Beginning June 1, customers who purchase a ticket online at delta.com will have the option to contribute toward the offset of carbon emissions associated with air travel through a donation to The Conservation Fund. A one-click donation option to The Conservation Fund, made seamlessly during an online ticket purchase at delta.com, will offset the carbon footprint associated with a round-trip flight. Contributions of $5.50 for a domestic roundtrip flight and $11 for an international roundtrip flight will be used by The Conservation Fund to plant trees throughout the U.S. and abroad. A small portion of the donation also supports the organization's education and outreach efforts.
