Get Ready for the East's Spring Ritual: Skiing Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington
New for 2008, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), which operates the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center at the base of New Hampshire's Mount Washington, is holding "Tucks Talks" on weekend mornings to help backcountry skiers prepare for a day of spring skiing at Tuckerman Ravine.
Mount Washington, which as the East's tallest mountain tops out at 6,288 feet, gives Eastern skiers a big-mountain backcountry skiing experience complete with 55-degree pitches, open crevasses, avalanches, falling ice, high winds, extreme weather and related hazards. While backcountry skiers challenge themselves here during the entire winter, most visit the mountain between March and May, when the chances are higher of getting a classic spring day of skiing.

Sen. Leahy Secures $270,00 to Help Rebuild Green Mountain Club Headquarters
Sen. Patrick Leahy has secured a $270,000 federal economic development appropriation to help the Green Mountain Club (GMC) rebuild its Visitor Center, which includes the Marvin B. Gameroff Hiker Center. In January 2003 the Visitor Center, located in Waterbury Center, Vt., was gutted by fire.
In preparation for the Green Mountain Club’s upcoming 100th birthday in 2010, the club announced its Second Century Campaign in June 2007, with the objectives of raising funds to rebuild from the fire, conservation of Long Trail lands, and increasing funding for future maintenance of the Long Trail, trail shelters, and stewardship of land near the Long Trail.
Delta, Northwest and Continental:
Be Ready to Pay $25 for Second Checked Bag
Three more U.S. legacy carriers have jumped on the bandwagon to charge passengers $25 for their second checked bag, which used to be free: Delta, Northwest and Continental. It's not too risky to bet that American Airlines will follow suit soon enough.
Of course, there's "fine print" for each of the airlines.
