We're Off to Southern Colorado to Visit Five Resorts; No Site Updates While We're Away

It's time for one of the best things about our jobs: Going on a vacation...er, I mean going on a business trip. That's what it is: business. But when it's a business trip like this, it feels like a vacation! We'll spend eight days straight skiing five different resorts—a reconnaissance mission so we can tell you what to expect if you decide to visit any of these resorts.

We leave Saturday, March 24, to fly to Durango. Upon landing, we'll be whisked away to Silverton Mountain to spend a day enjoying the guided hike-to terrain of this unique skiing and riding destination. Next we'll spend a day of skiing at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, hopefully via snowcat, followed by a day at Telluride Ski Resort that will include a guided hike to its as-yet-undeveloped terrain on Mountain Quail. After this whirlwind tour, we'll head to Crested Butte, where we'll spend three days skiing and exploring. Last up is a visit to Monarch Mountain for a day of "resort" skiing and a day of snowcat skiing. We hop back on a plane Wednesday, April 4, to return to reality. You can look forward to a front-page story at the beginning of next season covering our Southern Colorado adventures.

Since we'll be busy researching the winter travel opportunities in Southern Colorado, we won't be updating the website. When we get back, we'll begin transitioning our coverage to warm-weather activities such as kayaking, hiking, remote camping and whatever else catches our fancy.

Ramshorn Guest Ranch Provides Easy Access to Wyoming's Most Pristine Playgrounds

The Ramshorn Guest Ranch, about 12 miles west of Dubois, Wyo., is positioned in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains between the Teton and Wind River mountain ranges. This is not a typical guest ranch with horses, dudes and people playing cowboy, but rather a place to rent a rustic cabin or Native American teepee and get away from life’s everyday hassles and conveniences while enjoying Wyoming’s most pristine mountain environment.

The family-owned ranch operates from June to August with access to phenomenal mountain biking and hiking on single-track trails, fishing, photography and potential for early-summer backcountry skiing.

Beacon and Eggs Competitions Promote Avalanche Awareness and Preparedness

In its continuing effort to promote avalanche awareness, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort and Wasatach Backcountry Rescue are revising the standard Easter egg hunt by offering a beacon hunt for people of all ages on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The championship round, which features the winners of various Beacon and Eggs competitions across the West, will be held Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Snowbird.

For the March 31 event, avalanche beacons will be buried in a one-acre area at Snowbird. Tracker beacons are wrapped in a protective pad to simulate the feel of a buried victim and placed below the snow surface, then a snowcat grooms the entire area to hide any tracks.

Department of Transportation Recognizes New U.S. Start-up Airline Virgin America

The Department of Transportation (DOT) tentatively approved Virgin America’s application to start a new U.S. airline, finding the carrier is owned and controlled by U.S. citizens and is fit to operate as a domestic airline.

The DOT Order proposes that Virgin America finalize changes already offered by the company to address concerns about its citizenship, and to satisfy certain other pre-launch conditions. Virgin America said it hoped to receive final DOT approval in anticipation of a mid-summer launch from its base at San Francisco International Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Four additional cities—Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and Washington D.C.—are planned to be added within nine months of the company's first flight.

State Department Ramps Up Passport Production To Meet Record Demand

As passport demand rises to historic levels to meet the new travel requirements that kicked in on Jan. 23, 2007, the Department of State is taking necessary steps to meet the challenge: regional agencies are working through the weekend; telephone information is available daily, including weekends; volunteers are manning the phones to answer questions; and volunteers are manning the desks to process applications.

The Department of State has set a new record for passport production. In the week ending March 22, the department issued 379,000 passports, on top of the 321,000 passports issued the previous week. The Department of State is on track to issue over 1.5 million passports in March.
