A Little Savviness Goes a Long Way
in Helping You Afford to Chase the Snow
Remember the days when you could plan last-minute day or weekend ski trips based on where the snow fell and not go broke paying ticket window prices? If you're savvy, you can still find affordable ways to chase the snow.
Believe it or not, ski resorts do want your business. Most resorts offer discounted lift tickets, though some certainly are notorious for never or rarely doing so. But even among the resorts that offer discounts, some make it easier than others to find the deals.
First I'll start with the simple ways to find deals by sharing my favorite websites that do all or most of the work for you.
Maine Conservation Purchase Protects
AMC's Lodge-to-Lodge Ski/Hike/Bike Route
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) recently announced its purchase of the 29,500-acre Roach Ponds tract—a historic transaction that marks the creation of a 63-mile-long corridor of conservation land comprising nearly 650,000 contiguous acres open to public recreational use in the Maine Woods. It also provides a permanent connection between three traditional Maine sporting camps, with a fourth to be added in 2011, through cross-country skiing, hiking and biking trails.
The first leg of the self-guided lodge-to-lodge skiing tour travels across the newly protected property and then continues the next day to AMC’s 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property, which is also permanently protected.
The AMC offers a unique opportunity to cross-country ski lodge-to-lodge on an expansive, protected natural landscape in the heart of Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness. Lodging, meals, and gear shuttling are all included, making it possible to ski with a light pack and combine a remote backcountry experience with traditional Maine sporting camp hospitality. Each lodge features private cabins heated by wood stoves and freshly prepared meals, and a wood-fired sauna welcomes skiers on the final stretch of the trip.
Alaska Alpine Adventures Launches
Guided Hiking Trip in Denali National Park
Alaska Alpine Adventures, an Anchorage, Alaska-based adventure travel company, has announced that starting in Summer 2010 they will offer a new basecamp hiking trip in Denali National Park and Preserve. This four-day, three-night camping and hiking adventure will take place in the heart of Denali National Park and just 17 miles from the summit of Mount McKinley.
"We are really excited about this Alaska hiking tour," said manager and guide Aaron Fetter. "We have been looking to offer a guided hiking trip in Denali National Park for almost 10 years, but have been continually stymied by transportation and permit hurdles. Finally those hurdles have been cleared and we are ready to go. This will be the most unique guided Alaska hiking trip in the state."

• A tool that can be downloaded onto a customer’s desktop and feeds deal updates.
New York Zipline Adventure Tours to Open Zipline and Canopy Tour at Hunter Mountain
Hunter Mountain has teamed up with New York Zipline Adventure Tours (NYZAT) to provide what they claim will be the longest and highest ziplines and canopy tour in North America. The ziplines, canopy tour and adventure tower are scheduled to open in Spring 2010.
"Greene County was the ideal location for this project," said Jay Bialsky, owner of NYZAT, which also operates similar ziplines in New Hampshire and Jamaica. "The Catskills combine beautiful terrain and easy access from the New York metro area."
NYZAT will build three separate tours on Hunter Mountain, from mild to wild, providing fun for all ages. The longest tandem ziplines, extending from the summit, will be more than 3,000 feet long and nearly 600 feet off the ground. The three individual courses will total almost five miles of ziplines, sky bridges and challenge elements.
