Maine Huts & Trails Opens First Remote Hut
at Poplar Stream Falls in Carrabassett Valley
After years of planning and fundraising, Maine Huts & Trails has opened its first remote hut, the Poplar Stream Falls Hut, in Carrabassett Valley near Sugarloaf Resort. Reservations for overnight stays are available for the rest of Winter 2008 as well as for Spring, Summer and Fall 2008.
The Poplar Stream Falls Hut is open year round and also provides a day-trip destination for visitors seeking a single-day backcountry experience. Upon completion, the Maine Huts & Trails hut-to-hut network will consist of a 180-mile recreation corridor from Bethel to Moosehead Lake and up to 12 huts, each designed to accommodate up to 40 guests.
Appalachian Mountain Club Accepting Registrations for Volunteer Vacations
Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is now accepting registrations for Adult Volunteer Vacations on the trail for summer 2008. You can join a crew in the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, or Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park, both in Maine.
In addition, new this year, AMC will have a Trail Work crew in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. This is a joint program offered by AMC Major Excursions and AMC Volunteer Trails Programs and takes place in August 2008.

United to Charge Passengers $25 for 2nd Bag, Ups Other Bag Fees on Domestic Flights
United Airlines will start charging domestic passengers $25 to check a second piece of baggage if they are not part of its most-frequent-flier programs. The change goes into effect with travel starting on May 5, 2008, and applies to tickets purchased on or after Feb. 4, 2008.
United’s most frequent fliers—customers who have Premier status or higher in Mileage Plus, or Silver status or higher with Star Alliance—will continue to receive the benefit of checking two bags for free. The new charge applies to those who purchase nonrefundable domestic economy tickets.
